[RPG]: Legends of Excalibur, reviewed by NPC Jeremy (5/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10449.phtml

Jeremy Reaban's Summary:

Last year in a review, I pleaded for a company to make a good d20 King Arthur sourcebook. Well, someone made a great one. Largely based on Malory's Morte d'Arthur. Cooler than Eberron!

In defense of Pendragon

Well, I don't agree with the following:

*It also was too gritty for my taste, trying to be realistic, rather than legendary. I mean, the "real" Arthur wasn't famous, the legendary one was. So why play a game about the "real" one, minus all the fantastic stuff?*

Pendragon is DEFINITELY not trying to simulate the *real* Athur's life! It can be too gritty for your tastes, granted, but it is firmly based on traditional Arthurian legends and on Malory. It contains (especially in the 4th edition) all the enchantments and the fantastic stuff you can expect from these traditional stories... It contains a chapter entitled *The Enchantment of Britain*! There is a section devoted to magic, there are notes on the supernatural feats of Merlin and Morgan le Fay and info on the Holy Grail (and a supplement is under development regarding this very matter).

And it's certainly not 'pretentious'.

Morte D&D'Arthur

Nice review! The formatting's particularly well done.

This game may have jettisoned the D&D races, but I still can't imagine it resulting in adventures that actually feel Arthurian -- not with a mixed group in which knights are just one more character class.

That was a great review mate, many thanks! Although I prefer Pendragon, it still sounds like it's worth checking out.

Well written and very informative, more reviews please!

Hedge Wizard and Mana

Both of these are terms from the druidic tradition, and given that Morgause (Morgan le Fay) and Gwynhwyfar (Guinevere) both hail from the ancient Celtic tradition, the terms fit well for magic in an Arthurian game.

Nice review overall! I may have to check this puppy out.

Here, here. Pendragon is easily one of the 5 finest roleplaying games ever written, and is supported by a dozen well-researched and interesting source books. Including all the material in those books, its magic system is one of the most interesting and historically rooted outside of Ars Magica (if the mechanics were tightened up, it would actually be better). I am happy to hear about a new d20 arthurian game (the relevant section in 1st edition AD+D Dieties and Demigods was always one of my favorites), and am sure it could be great fun, but lets not get carried away and start talking smack about Chaosium.

Yes, I have to say that for doing Authurian flavor, Pendragon is the way to go. All agurements about D20 being able to work with all genres aside, the game systems and writing that have gone into Pendragon are pretty impressive. It is distincty a different breed of RPG devoted to the chaste pursuit of Aurthurian and Knightly legend. I think it all depends if you really need to have the D20 in your sessions or not. They two gaming systems just don't do the same thing.

King Arthur ... Non-Malory versions

Actually, I'm looking for a more plausible version of the King Arthur legend, whose blood is mixed with a Roman general.

Addendum...

(Or however you spell it)

1) I was just joking about Eberron, I noticed that the 3 reviews of that were the most popular reviews.

2) The Minstrel actually can cast spells, too. Druid ones. (Though not as well as a Druid)
