Based on the information, it looks like a typical eight-year-old could play with no help. Am I right in my reading?

I think so.

(The box claims 12+, but the choices are fairly simple, and if you want you can keep everything totally open [resource cards are usually held in hand] with little loss to the game, which gives ample opportunity to point out plays.)

I've played original Settlers with my 6- and 8-year-old kids. We play with resource cards showing, in part because my 6-year-old has trouble fanning cards in his hand. They didn't have any problems with the actual game play, although their attention tends to wander during other players' turns if the game goes too long.

I actually had better success with my 6-year-old by playing 2-player with each of us controlling two different colors and alternating turns. There was less down time for him so it kept his interest better.
