[RPG]: Cthulhu Invictus, reviewed by Wood (2/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10528.phtml

Wood Ingham's Summary:

Cthulhu in Ancient Rome! An interesting take on the subject. Maybe a little overpriced, though.

Adventure idea

This sounds awesome. Pity it's sold out.

I've been itching to run a Cthulhu adventure set in ancient Rome.

Elagabalus, an emperor from a foreign city, named for his dubious patron deity, enshrined a mysterious black stone that fell from the heavens on one of the hills (iirc Palatine) as a sign from his god.

The Cthulhu possibilities for this are endless.

There was a time, not that long ago, when "a superior piece of desktop publishing" was the professional standards for RPGs.

Thanks for the review.

Elagabalus was the best of the mad emperors. The whole biog, which is in the Historia Augusta (in Penguin/Viking Classics as "Lives of the Later Caesars" - the whole book is a good read), is full of ideas.

That third century period wher it all goes to hell (26 legitimate emperors in 50 years! and that's not including the pretenders!) is to my mind a great period for roleplaying in several genres.

There's also Maximinus the Thracian, about twenty or so years after Elagabalus. He was eight feet tall, apparently. That can't be right. And why *did* Aurelian suddenly make everyone worship the Unconquered Sun in 274 or thereabouts? And what about the sorceress Zenobia, queen of Palmyra?

I love Roman history.

yeah, roman history is awesome. I have a soft spot in my heart for the stuff they make up in the historia augusta.

Maximinus Thrax was eight feet tall and could pull a loaded ox-cart unaided!

Claudius Gothicus had eyes that burned a fiery red and could knock out the teeth of any man or beast with a single blow!

I read it in the historia, so it must be true

Availability of Chaosium's Monographs

I belong to a Basic Roleplaying mailing list, on which I found out an interesting detail about the availability of the Chaosium monographs.

Their website software is configured so that, as soon as a product is out of inventory, it's no longer listed in their website. This means that, if there's a run on a monograph (like this one) and they sell out their copies in stock, they no longer list the product on their website at all.

This is quite frustrating for fans, and presumably also for Chaosium, and I think they're taking steps to address the issue. However, they're quite a small operation now with not all that much in the way of funds, apparently.

In short, if you don't see "Cthulhu Invictus" listed on their site when you check, or one of their other monographs, that doesn't mean they don't have it available, just that there aren't any copies currently sitting on their shelves. Email them, or just check back in a little while, and you might find it available again (for example, it is now currently listed as available as I write this).

If we are to speak of Zenobia, then you might want to check out Mithras’ game –Zenobia_ at www.geocities.com/zozergames/zenobia.html. I like the rules, but most of the document is setting, so it could really be used with other systems if desired.

Yeah. I actually wrote this review a week ago, and since, about three separate people I know emailed Chaosium and asked them where it went.

I heard the news on Yog-Sothoth.com.

True, but they didn't cost $20, even accounting for inflation.

True, but they didn't cost $20, even accounting for inflation.

I think you'll find that paper prices have gone up disproportionately to inflation as a whole (to the tune of 2x or more).
