I live with two gay men. I couldn't categorically define either of them, or any of their boyfriends that I've met, as a butch or a femme. Sure, you get the major macho men and the wussie nancy boys -- just like you can find among straight guys -- but in my experience, most gay men are somewhere in between -- just like most straight guys. In fact, the only difference between straight guys and gay guys that I've consistently seen in every gay man I've met is -- surprise -- they like to have sex with other men.
...okay, and they own more shoes. I mean, really, who needs more than three pairs?

...So I see the header on this review and the basic rundown, and this book sounds really good. Before I start reading the actual review I'm wondering, will this be a resource/historical book not aligned to any particular game, or an actual game all unto its self? Then I read the review and realise, f..k, this is just another damned D20 book. D20 is a blight, a virus, a cancre on role playng gaming. Enough D20. Let it burn. Give us rules that make some kind of sense when compared to the rules of the real world. If all future games are part of the D20 franchise, we will have drastically dumbed down RPGing in general. Wake up people. Vive la Differance! You're all smarter than that. I'm sorry, but D20 makes me despair.

>This book also reminded me of the excellent Penhaligon Trilogy, set in Mystara, which focuses on characters I think could best be described as Honorable Knights. <
Excellent? Aren't those the novels where griffon mounts are commonplace and villages have stores that sell magic weapons? And the books take themselves seriously?

I agree, somewhat. Any mention of feats now makes me wary. Prestige classes make me very wary. But not everything d20-related has been bad. What about Testament from Green Ronin?

Well, here's another way of looking at it:
So you want to make an RPG supplement. You could make it "generic," i.e. no system rules. You can then watch it fly straight to the "Not D20" ghetto of the store shelves.
OR, you can crap out some prestige classes and feats and such, assume that buyers who aren't D20 robots will be smart enough to adapt the material they like to their own games. In the process, you can even make some money.
I was actually buying a fair amount of D20 stuff before WotC refocused the game to Crunch (system-specific stuff) over Fluff (stuff that aids my imagination).
