"Look, I know..."

"Look, I know Tony can be kind of an ass sometimes, but we've been friends a long time, okay? And he really does have some good points once you get to know him. But mainly I've been friends with him since I was fifteen, so could you just lay off him once in a while?"

Assumption built into review

Thanks for the review, Roger? I confess to having a soft spot in my heart for Synnibarr, although that might change if I ever actually run it. (And since you have run it, did you mean to tag your review as a capsule review?)

One observation, though: this isn't really a review of the game as a whole so much as your thoughts on some specific aspects of it. It presumes prior knowledge of the game. If I weren't already familiar with Synnibarr, I wouldn't have a very good idea of what it's about after reading the review. There's nothing wrong with that, per sé, but I'd suggest more clearly identifying your review for what it is in order to prevent those unfamiliar with the game being reviewed from disappointment.

Oh, also:

Giant Mutant Fire Clams.

Flying Grizzlies with Laserbeam Eyes.

Sorry, but no discussion of Synnibarr is complete without those two mentions.

Howdy,

That was really not a review.

While your anecdotes are a good read you did not actually tell us much of anything about the target product.

I'd suggest sending a e-mail off to Shannon and asking him to pull this ASAP, then either reworking it to actually include a overview of the material you claim to be covering or simply re-submitting it in it's entirety for conisderation as being used as an article in the columns section.

Of course that is just my opinion, YMMV.

Kind Regards,

Kester Pelagius

What Dan said.

This should have been a post at the forums. It would have been a good post, mind you, since it touches on the personal preferences of the reviewer, talks about playing styles, and in general makes some points.

However, it is not anywhere near a review. When the reviewer spends one third of his space telling the readed what he played, what he usually enjoys and everything, then something is wrong. Not to mention that if you don't know zip about the thing, this so called review is not making you any wiser whatsoever, since it barely describes how the game works.

All that, with my full respect for the reviewer, who I just believe he simply chose the wrong medium to express his thoughts on the game.

I have to agree. A third or more of it isn't even about the game at all, it's about the reviewer himself and all his anecdotes about gamers and gaming. This might have been better as a thread in Open.

I don't know if it can be bought new at this point.

I got mine at the Half-Price Books in Edmonds, Washington last year.
