[DVD]: Life With the Dice Bag, reviewed by Aeonite (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10591.phtml

Michael Fiegel's Summary:

Life With the Dice Bag is a documentary about Role-Playing Games and those who play them. Shot between 2002-2003, it is constructed almost entirely of interviews with actual game players, clumped together topically to give a rough overview of the hobby.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like there is still an opportunity for someone to make a definitive documentary about gaming.

Agreed! Another nice review.

I get the impression that you didn't find this documentary as entertaining as Uber Goober. Is that correct?

I wouldn't say it was less entertaining, per se. It's just about on par with Uber Goober, though each does things a bit differently. Perhaps I merely sounded less entertained since much of the same ground was covered in both DVDs, and I saw this one second.

The only criteria I could possible use to recommend Uber Goober over Life With the Dice Bag is the extra material on Uber Goober, including several lengthy featurettes with Gary Gygax (who's featured comparatively briefly on LWtDB).

I do, however, love the humorous re-enactments on this latter disc, however brief.

Gamer Girld Dice Bag?

We also learn about Gamer Girl dice (20-siders with two 20s and no 1s)

WTF? Is the implication here that girls cheat at RPGs?

Well, the implication is at least that the girl demonstrating the dice cheats at gaming. Neither the documentarian nor myself is making such an allegation.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that it was you (or even necessarily the documentarians) that were implying that...I was just shocked that there were what I assumed to be a group of people (either documentarians or subjects) who were going around implying such things.

It's...odd that a lone girl felt the need to cheat and then act as though cheating was a "girl thing."

maybe there are no 1s because the 1 is supposed to be phallic, and a gamer girl obviously has no phallus?

y'know, kinda like the 1-male 0-female thing you occasionally see?
