I haven't even played Bohnanza very much, but your review highlights an interesting and what seems a very important weakness in the game.

I love SpaceBeans

I bought SpaceBeans on a whim a few years ago while sitting bored at a game store. We played a fourplayer game that afternoon and had a blast.

I agree with your point that hardcore gamers that NEED to win will eventually get bored with it.

But it's a great game for your family & friends. I took it to a Thanksgiving get together. My mom and aunts play cards all the time. We played for over two hours, and no one got bored.

Possible Fix?

Is there a balanced way to tweak the rules so the "starve your neighbor" strategy doesn't work? For example:

* If a player is not passed any cards at the start of his turn, he may pick one of his right-hand neighbor's cards (face up or face down) and put it in his own hand.

* If a player is not passed any cards at the start of his turn, he *must* draw at least one/two/? cards.

Or maybe... punish the player who isn't passing cards? Maybe his neighbor picks a card (face up or face down) and he's forced to discard it.

Darrin,

We considered your second idea as a fix to the problem. If people are requied to draw each and every turn, then that would ensure enough cards in circulation arond the table to make things more interesting.
