[RPG]: Lashings of Ginger Beer, reviewed by SteveD (3/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10686.phtml

Steve Darlington's Summary:

A spiffing idea, but a less-than-spiffing execution.

Intriguing concept, but I wonder about the appeal

Great review, Steve! The only real question of mine you left unanswered is what the adventures are about.

I like the idea of this game, but I have to wonder how appealing it will be to the typical roleplayer. Seems like we always want some sort of "weirdness factor"; here, you not only lack a "weirdness factor", but you also play a child.

That said, I'd certainly give it a try.

There's a scenario at rpgnow for Savage Worlds - The Secret of Smugglers Cove - which is also based on the books by Enid Blyton or Arthur Ransome. I ran this the other day fairly successfully. I think any generic system would work, so long as your players have the right attitude.

Attitude was assisted by having lashings of ginger beer, old fashioned lemonade, and jam sandwiches on hand.

I can't belive someone has the nerve to charge for dung like this.

This is a serious problem with the indy scene. People write this stuff and instead of giving it away for free like everyone else they charge for it.

Wake up.

Hi Dec,

Having bought eight or nine Indie games, I have to disagree. I'm very happy to pay for a good indie.

The trick is finding a good one (and one which suits my tastes) - and the best way to do that is to keep an eye out for reviews and the buzz on indie web sites.

Thanks to the above review, you now know whether or not you want to pay $2.50 for Simon's game.

I paid for it, and feel I got my money's worth. I do agree with the reviewer about the Swot skill list being a bit punchy, but that's one of the very few flaws in this charming, delicious product.

Lashings...

"What’s that you say? You don’t know what a lashing of ginger beer is? Well, frankly, nobody does. Nobody ever has."

Bzzzzt. Wrong. Everyone else knows, we just didn't tell you.

"Lashings" is British slang for a large amount of something.

"Ginger beer" is a soft drink, sort of like ginger ale, but much, much more gingery - very strong stuff that will make your eyes water. The best and strongest ginger beer is Jamaican style.

We played a short Ginger Beer campaign last summer, and for us (a group of rather jaded thirtysomething players), the appeal was strong. We were all raised on Famous Five, so the setting was very familiar.

Like many other games seeking to emulate a certain type of book or show, I found Ginger Beer fun in small doses, but not interesting enough for extended play.

Still, there was a certain thrill in sitting in a park on a sunny Saturday afternoon pretending to be children and solving the Mystery of the International League of Criminals. We even made a picnic out of it, and tried to keep up with our characters' appetite - substituting real beer for ginger beer, of course.

Oh, bollocks.

2.5 dollars is a damn cheap price for any game which is played and enjoyed at least once. Hell, I spend more on beer each time I game.
