[RPG]: Dead Inside, reviewed by Kester Pelagius (2/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10693.phtml

C. Demetrius Morgan's Summary:

Dead Inside is a rules lite supernatural horror RPG set in a conceptualized version of our modern world where the characters are soul-lost and in need of spiritual mending. Built upon the same Prose Descriptive Qualities (PDQ) system foundation that underpins Monkey, Ninja, Pirate, Robot: The Role Playing Game DI takes the system into totally different territory.

Print on Demand?

What the heck is a Print-on-demand product? Does it look like something I would pick up at a game store (nice binding, glossy cover) or a cheap copy from my local Kinkos (taped/stapled binding, paper cover)?

Unless this version was re-written by Phil, Whispering Vault was written by Mike Nystul.

Greetings,

>>Unless this version was re-written by Phil, Whispering Vault was written by Mike Nystul.<<

Quite right.

However, the copyright holder, according to the PDF I have, is listed as one Phil Reed. Thus I am referring to "author"; viz:

"That’s Phil Reed, as in the author of The Whispering Vault."

In the sense of "originator" of the material. Granted this was largely an assumption on my part. If it is erroneous I apologize most sincerely to Mr. Nystul, who did a very good job in writing this excellent genre RPG and deserves to be recognized accordingly.

Should Mr. Nystul or Mr. Reed happen to read this please let me know if my assumption was in error and I shall emend the review accordingly.

Kind Regards,

Chris Morgan

Game comparisons

Great review! It's on my "To Review" list as well.

From what I've skimmed so far, the system doesn't really remind me all that much of FUDGE except in the most general sense. The first comparison that popped into my mind was Over the Edge, although I don't suppose it's any closer to OtE than it is to FUDGE.

I'm not sure about the Whispering Vault comparison, though. WV's pretty mission-focussed, while DI sounds much more focussed on character development.

It really depends on which POD service. But, in general, they're built roughly the same as a standard paperback you could buy at any store -- perfect-bound with a heavy cardstock cover. Most services offer color covers and B&W interiors. Some services offer glossy covers, some don't. Some services offer color interiors, most don't. Expect better quality than you could produce using your printer or a Kinko's, but not quite the same quality you'd expect from a big publisher like WotC.

Nystul wrote the game -- and it says so in the game.

I have not written any material for the Vault.

``For starters the basic game premise here is that your character doesn’t have a soul, whether they were born that way or their soul was stolen, your character is literally “dead inside”. Which explains the title.''

Arg! Grr! Aaaauuuugggghhhh!

Never mind the run-on sentence followed by a sentence fragment for no good reason. The fact is that someone is not "literally dead inside" unless his heart has stopped beating, his liver doesn't work, his kidneys have failed, and so on.

The word "literally" is not used for emphasis. It is used to express a lack of metaphor, that the words mean _exactly_ what they say.

Is it just me or has CU listened way to much to Peter Schickele?

Go on, look it up:-)

Additionally (and correct me if I'm wrong, Phil), Phil didn't acquire the rights to WV until after the decision to not publish DI through Ronin Arts happened.

Or was it more or less contemporaneous?
