[RPG]: Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game, reviewed by pawsplay (5/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10749.phtml

Robert J. Grady's Summary:

An introduction to the D&D game. The booklets are well-written enough not only to instruct players in the rules, but to avoid creating misconceptions. This set is an excellent buy for someone who is already an experienced D&D player and would simply like the cool minis and tiles.

I agree

I loved it, I've been playing or GMing for 17 odd years now and don't like D20 but the basic set ( brought for my kids to play) has reminded me of the fun I used to have, the elegant simplicity in basic rules, heroic heros and dungeon bashing.
It's worth it's price for that. Made me venture back into Fantasy RPGing ( Lone Wolf to be precise) It combined with the streamlining of lone Wolf D20 has rekindled my flickering flame for RPG.

I echo the sentiments of the reviewer and Kane. I bought the set intending to play with my 8 year old son and 5 year old daughter.
Are they under the age requirements? Sure.

Did they still enjoy sneaking around the dungeon. You bet.

Was it time well spent with my kids teaching them basic tactics, visual shape recognition (dice types), basic math skills (O.K. you need higher than a 12 to hit the beastie). Yes.

The box set is well worth it. Heck I might even put out some character sheets based on the other D&D minis out there so you could have more variety.

Later,

Greg V.

As an introduction to kids, this is the best set available right now as a primer for RPGing. Between this and Heroscape, my two boys (also under the age on the box) come home and ask to play games instead of turning on the TV. Can't complain about that!

The boys do want to pick up a booster or two whenever we hit the game store -- to get more "bad guys".

I think the set would have been more useful if it had included rules for advancement up to 3rd level.

3rd Level

Have to agree.

3rd level would've hit the perfect note. Otherwise it's a great product. Much better than the first cut of the basic 3rd ed rules (the yellow box).

Yeah, 3rd's the magic number, especially for the spellcasting classes. This does sound like a well thought out game.

Great Xmas Present

Thank you for the quality review. I rarely say anything good about WotC and I have bemoaned the lack of an entry game. This one sounds excellent and I hope it succeeds tremendously.

Plus, don't you miss the Jesusfreaks calling us satanists? I haven't heard a non-political screaming fit for almost a decade and maybe, just maybe this product could bring back those good old days!

I hope everyone buys one of these Basic sets to send someone for Christmas. In fact, let's all buy this D&D set for that yearly ritual of Toys for Tots which plague our offices and malls.

Yes both my kids are under the age on the box and now when they come home instead of wanting to play the x-box they want to play D&D. Even the wife who was always to nervous to run a game had a go at running the adventure in the box. It was written in a way that made her feel confident and in control.

I agree with the rest 3rd level would have been the sweet spot

Map Tiles?

Post originally by screenmonkey at 2004-10-22 18:22:28

i was wondering about the map tiles. How many are there? What size are they? What sorts of features can be found on each side? Are there numerous combinations to be had with them such that i could create a decent variety of dungeons with them?

Thanks for the help!

Happy Gaming, =)

There are four, 10x10 double-sided tiles with a variety of terrain features.
