[RPG]: Fireborn Player's Guide, reviewed by Andrew Ellis Troubio (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10925.phtml

Andrew Ellis Troubio's Summary:

Fireborn takes inspiration from The Matrix, Highlander, Shadowrun, WOD, and mashes it all together in an interesting system with crunch. Now they just need to hire an editor to replace the blind monkeys they currently have on staff.

A nitpick

The reviewer says:

<i> "FFG made their first foray into non-d20 RPG at Gen Con Indy with Fireborn."</i>

Did somebody miss <b>Blue Planet?</b>

Not to nitpick a nitpick, but yes and no:

Blue Planet wasn't developed by FFG, but by another company (Biohazard?). Fireborn, IIRC, is the first in-house non-d20 game.

So, yes. And no. :-)

Biohazard Games did indeed develop /Blue Planet/, but the game languished for years. Once FFG got the license, /Blue Planet/ returned to life. Several of the books FFG has put out are original works rather than reprints of existing material. So FFG actually has done a lot of development on that world, though they didn't create it. They've also made the game a lot more playable, with a much simpler system.

/Fireborn/ is their first non-d20 game, all right, but they've had some prior experience in non-d20 development.

The first RPG that FFG produced was the Twilight Imperium RPG, which was non-d20.

But, apart from its Political Space Opera premise, the game was so underdeveloped (even with its one supplement) that we mercifully try to forget it

Well lets hope Fireborn sees more long term success and support than Blue Planet.

I love the BP setting, and thought the second edition rules worked well enough, but it still faded into the mists.

A lot of errors in this book......

I like FFG they are a local company in my area and they put of good quality stuff the vast majority of the time. Fireborn while being a great concept and a very interesting read was full of editing problems. Take a look @ the Errata page on their website it's 16 pages long! I'm disapointed with FFG on this book & the GMs guide, based on their other products I expect much better in the production aspect. That being said its still a very playable interesting game and is worth a look if you are at all interested in dragons.

I do feel that the level of errata in the game has been exagerated by some people. The 16 page errata PDF available on the FFG website consists of only 6 illustrated pages of actual errata (approximately 4 pages of text, if not less), together with a further 6 pages (again illustrated) of FAQs and 4 pages of 'sequence cards' for GMs to cut out and use.

Many of the errata correct typos rather than actual errors in the rules (although there are some rule changes), and the game can be played 'out of the box' without concern.

And since the errata is available in both PDF format from the website and hard copy from your FLGS or direct from FFG, there is no reason why it need impede anyone's enjoyment of the game.

Its still a good game, but I expect more from FFG. They are in my opinion one of the best game publishers. The layout could be a lot better, there were way too many typos, and the writting was only average. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy this book because of some spelling errors, layout problems, or the writting. Though there are people out there (sadly) that can not stand to look @ a book that is filled with errors. I bought the PG & GMG despite knowing that the book was somewhat flawed and I like it as a whole. As stated before I think the concept of the game is great and hasn't been done before ( at least that I know of). It has one of the better Die Pool systems that I have seen. It also has a lot of campaign ideas bouncing around in my head. The PG just lacks the level of finish that FFGs other products have. Even so FFG still put out a product in FBPG that is better than most.
