[RPG]: Solid! The d20 Blaxploitation Experience, reviewed by Kevin Mowery (3/2)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11119.phtml

Kevin Mowery's Summary:

The blaxploitation film genre gets the d20 treatment. It's not perfect, but it is a good starting point.

The choice of adventure

Excellent review, Kevin!

And I agree: that does sound like a strange choice for the intro adventure. I can only guess that it was a nod to gamers' supposed aversion to any setting without a "weirdness factor". If so, though, it makes me wonder why the authors thought a game like this would go over well in the first place.

Bummer. I was going to look to this for inspiration for my 70's themed "Foxxy the Vampire Slayer" game. Looks like my money would be better spent renting Soul Cinema classics at my local video store...

The Luke Cage Essential that Marvel put out is nothing short of amazing. I forgot Luke flew all the way to Latvaria to collect 200.00 that Dr. Doom owed him. Just great stuff.

Thanks for the review.

It's been a long time since I wrote a review here, so it's nice to see this one well-received.

I do want to make an addendum to the review, namely that I know and understand that this book was a labor of love for the creators, and while I think it could have been much better with a tighter focus and better use of space, I do think there is some good stuff in there. I've already thought of several campaigns I could run with it.

The Cage story is a classic, but it is also a nod to a crime/action movie (starring Lee Marvin, I think) in which the anti-hero main character does just that (go through hell to collect 200 bucks from a deadbeat).
