Death Machines

Are found in the Player's Handbook. And even though they are not even remotely like any DM in previous editions, they are cool- metal oozes that engulf things they want to analyse and driven insane by keeper AIs. Plus all the guns of course.

Sounds disappointing...

But it was a darned good review, FYI.

I especially like this part:

>>This is just batshit lunacy, the kind that was really fun back in the original Gamma World, but which seems utterly out of place when you look at the two corebooks for the d20 version.<<

As if Fire Retardant Foam spitting mutant wouldn't be odd in any version of GW!

Well, ok, I admit that I did create a living fence creature that lived in alleys of ancient cities that attacked traveling PCs.... but you can hardly compare the two!

;-)

So that's where they were hiding. I haven't read through the entirety of the Player's Handbook yet, as it's in .pdf format and kinda difficult to read that way - still, I'll go check it out. Thanks for the tip!

Actually, given the premise as I understand it for this edition of Gamma World, I think such weirdness feels right, in a way. It's the same kind of "unlimited tech + unlimited stupidity" theme found in Red Dwarf and Chi-Chian.

Stand-Alone?

Are the other two GammWorld books vital to understanding this one, or could you make do with just a copr of D20 Modern, or even just the SRD?

For those of us who are exclusively interested in the insane parts.

As a lurker in the GammaWorld threads on Open, here is what I've noticed:

GWd20 Team: Well, what do you think of the new game?
Gamers: It's not gonzo enough! Where's the wierd, over-the-top stuff we loved from the TSR days?! We want freaky stuff to be and to kill
GWd20 Team: Um. Okay. We'll do something about that, then.

(later)

GWd20 Team: So, do you like the new, wierder stuff? We've tried to mix up gonzo and straight.
Gamers: It's too wierd! Why aren't you being consistent?
GWd20 Team: Cripes.

Any direction this product line went, there was a vocal group who deplored the change. No wonder White Wolf pulled the line.

Your welcome. I do wish they had made the warbots a lot tougher or converted the battlebots. Those glowing diamonds would make for an interesting enounter (just before the party is reduced to cinders).

There maybe a mutation or two that are referenced back to the PH, but overall the book just needs the d20 M SRD.

The robot templates. They are a lot more interesting than the lame environmental ones (wow, I get +5 to survival checks) and the funky cancer in the first section. I would use the Frankenstein (mix two or more robots) and Rebuilt (by the current people) in any setting with the Created.
