[RPG]: City State of the Invincible Overlord, reviewed by NPC Jeremy (3/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11182.phtml

Jeremy 'The Jaunty' Reaban's Summary:

The original Fantasy City for D&D from Judges Guild gets a 3.5 Makeover from Necromancer Games. A very good upgrade for the most part, staying true to the original while expanding on it.

Open Gaming License

"Interestingly, the original product had several D&D things that TSR considered to be their IP. Mind Flayers and Beholders and such. WOTC apparently gave NG/JG permission to continue to use them. Which is nice, I thought."

If I'm not mistaken, everyone who agrees to the open gaming license can use mind flayers or beholders in their setting. Decent review and all, but you should really do some more research on WotC's current IP policies before suggesting that they still employ the iron-fisted tactics of TSR.

Actually, Mind-Flayers and Beholders are a part of the declared Product Identity that WotC releases with the OGL. However, that doesn't mean that they won't make a deal with a publisher to use their PI.

You're mistaken....

WOTC has decided that certain creatures, most notably Mind Flayers, but also Beholders, Githzerai/Githyanki and some other things are not open content, and in fact IP of WOTC. (Despite appearing in draft versions of the SRD).

So, companies need special permission to use them. Which WOTC did actually give to people with products about those beasies that were in the works before their policy shift. But that was a couple years ago. Thus my remark - it was nice of them to give it to NG so it could be updated properly.

The perils of mail order

I hope you have at least contacted the seller and asked where the missing item went?

I have mail ordered many times, and having had lots of stuff sent to me over the Atlantic without any problems at all.

Well, at first they claimed they never received payment.

Then, when I got a photostat of the cashed money order and sent it to them as proof, they told me to get lost (in so many words). By this time, it was months past the period where you could complain or report feedback on ebay.

I've bought probably 100s of items off the internet/ebay, and only been ripped off a handful of times. But it still pisses me off.
