[RPG]: The Book of Immortals, reviewed by NPC Jeremy (2/2)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11224.phtml

Jeremy Reaban's Summary:

The Book of Immortals is a d20 supplement from Mongoose, providing rules for Immortals. Immortals are in theory something of a bridge between Gods and mortals. In practice, these are pretty puny Immortals, sort of defeating the whole premise of the book. It also suffers from an overly complex and jargon filled rules system.

"I guess they have improved the editing - I didn't notice too many glaring typos (other than one almost obligatory "looses" instead of "loses".)."

D'oh! Thanks anyway -- I was a proofreader on this book and despite limited time I really tried to put it through the ringer, knowing that Mongoose had developed a bad rep after Conan.

"One weird thing, though, there are constant references to "Core Rulebook I" and "Core Rulebook II", which is a d20 license requirement that was changed a couple years ago (you can now refer to the PHB, DMG, MM, etc)."

Mongoose wanted to keep doing things the same, presumably so that their books would be consistent. Lately that's changed and they've started saying PHB and so on, but back when I was working on the Book of Immortals that wasn't the case.

Immortals and Gods

One problem I had with this book is that while it explicitly assumes the presence of gods, it doesn't give a hint as to the relation between divine and Immortal powers. It doesn't tell you how to become a quasi-deity, or what happens to an Immortal's abilities who becomes a god.

Any instances of "The treasure horde" or "so-and-so has a vast hoard at his command"?

And what about "the powers of mere mortals cannot effect a God"?
