[RPG]: Conan the Roleplaying Game, reviewed by Dan Davenport (3/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11369.phtml

Dan Davenport's Summary:

The bad news: this wasn't the OGL game to win me over to d20-based gaming. The good news: if you enjoy d20-based gaming, this is an excellent application of it to the savage world of Conan.

Is this the Resistance Table?

I read this...

"to replace the function of Armor Class in reducing the chance to take a hit, the game introduces an attack target number called the Defense Value. That, in turn, is 10 + either the Parry Bonus (based on the character's class and level plus Strength bonus) or the Dodge Bonus (based on the character's class and level plus Dexterity bonus), along with any size modifiers."

... and couldn't avoid thinking about BRP's Resistance Table. Am I wrong or does that rule work exactly as the old RT found in RuneQuest 25 years ago?

Yes, but in the same way I'd have thought any mechanic with 5% iterations and a linear randomizing method would play the same way.

The "differences" comes from (d20/BRP): the dice rolled (d20/d%); wanting a high vs low result; and the different critical/special/fumbled rolls between the systems.

(As an aside, when reading D&D3 for the first time, I thought I perceived an RQish quality lurking in the mechanics.)

Cheers,

Meirion

GREAT review, Dan!

Not only is this a great review, it's a natural printout to give new players of the game who are familiar with D&D, as it does an incredible job of describing in brief terms the difference between Conan and standard d20. Kudos!

Basically, they renamed AC to Defense Value and allow you to use either your Dex (dodge) OR your Strength (parry) bonus, rather than just Dex as in D&D.

Where's the real Dan?

I thought the review was great, until I saw the author wanted us to pardon a pun. Then I realized that this must've been written by an imposter.

Thanks very much, Jason! Given my relatively limited experience with d20, my biggest worry was flubbing that aspect of the review.

(Oh, and I do hope your generous praise bears no relation to this review copy of Dungeons & Zombies I have here... )

Thanks, JEL!

And it's me, never fear. As many #rpgnet regulars can attest, "pardon the pun" is just my way of not taking credit for puns I didn't intend.

Hah, I wish I could say it did, but I had nothing to do with getting you that review copy.

Do be gentle with me, though...

You did a far better job of covering the differences between OGL Conan and Plain Vanilla d20 than many d20 diehards.

Good review.
