[RPG]: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Monster Smackdown, reviewed by Dan Davenport (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11470.phtml

Dan Davenport's Summary:

The Angel Corebook overshadows it in the PC monster department, but this supplement shines as both a bestiary of Buffy monsters and as an in-depth look at what makes them tick.

Good review, as always! (Although you forgot to turn off the spoiler text for the conclusion )

Gah... I knew I should have test-posted it in Netscape before submitting it. It looks fine in IE. What browser are you using?

Firefox. It must be a browser thing, since I just checked it with IE and it's all there. Weird.

Ditto - it doesn't show in Firefox. But it's okay, I just selected it and read it anyway.

Shannon got it mostly fixed for Netscape now, although the original invisible "Conclusion" header's still in there. I've emailed him about that.

Spiffy review Mr. Davenport! One query though.. how do the custom monster creation rules compare to/mirror/supplement the demon creation reviews in Angel?

The custom monster creation rules in Monster Smackdown are more like an expansion on the rules found in the monster sections of both the Buffy and Angel Corebook. The difference is that many of the powers that Monster Smackdown adds to the monster section, Angel adds to the character creation section -- thus making those powers usable by PCs without having to go with a pre-packaged Demon Quality. (For example, both Angel and Monster Smackdown have rules for Natural Weapons, but in Angel, the ability is a Supernatural Quality with character point costs.)

Bravo again, Dan. And I agree about the railroadingness. It's just so annoying to look back through that episode as it is in the book and see just how much of it is 'Hah, puny mortals, you can do Nothing!'

*sigh* Cass wouldn't have let anyone else surrender, just her as a hostage. And using her dad was a low underhanded GM blow! *grin*

I also approve of Dru as your co-person this time. Afterall, she's on the back cover. But I hold no responsiblity for your translation.

And your Dru is much better than mine. Mine was coherant as type-print compared to yours...

Beth

Ah, but a necessary one, by your own admission. *grin*

No, but you do hold responsibility for my character in your being cuddled 'tween her breasts while in Pooh Bear form...

Oh, I don't think so. First of all, I had the luxury of not needing to convey anything remotely coherent as part of the gag. And secondly, you were writing on the fly, and I was not.
