Re: [RPG]: d20 Apocalypse, reviewed by Matt Drake (5/4)
I'm not a big D20 fan in the first place to be honest, but I think on the whole if I was going to turn to a particular D20 post-apocalyptic game, I'd still be using Darwin's World, a book I find rather useful for running similar settings in other game systems.

Agreed. Darwin's World is pretty damned cool, if you're a d20 fan. Its original iterations were pre-d20 Modern, so it is based off the DMG and PHB. I thought it was cool, though.
The difference here is that where Darwin's World is a single, developed game and setting, d20 Apocalypse is a toolkit. If Darwin's World is your bag, then you're in business right out of the box. If you want something different, d20 Apocalypse has a good amount of help for setting up something that isn't Darwin's World. I like both, for different reasons.
With d20 Cyberscape coming next, it seems there is only the "official" d20 Mecha missing to have a d20 Rifts, label removed, and all by WotC. Or am I missing something?

You seem to be dead on for the "offical" products, but I think WotC could do a lot worse than copying the mecha rules from the Mecha SRD, which I belive GoO put out. Though I suppose they'd have to come up with a setting for it... which doesnt' work so good anymore. THey used up space, and modern... so there's not a lot of setting unless they label it "d20: Anime"... which ALSO has been done by GoO.

You're still missing a decent game system to play in the Rifts multiverse.
d20 is just way too complicated and cumbersome to put together a RIFTS game with. We won't even talk about actually running a d20 Rifts campaign.

To each their own, I guess...
I thought that Darwin's World was purely hacked-together garbage, poorly thought out, and not half so interesting as 'Omega World'... which was only a Magazine Article!
Sadly, the latest iteration of 'Gamma World' doesn't seem to be a lot better, from what I've read.
Mostly, I'd suggest you ignore the various available products, and cobble together your own stuff...

I haven't picked this up yet (though I will, based largely on this review, once funds open up) but I was wondering if anything in this book was open content. Thanks.

Well, I'm glad you recognize that the Palladium system isn't much good for running RIFTS, either!
I really don't think that the D20 *System* is at fault, here...
It's a fine and workable Game system, if you do it right!
The trouble is, the various Feats, Character Classes, and other 'setting specific' material from D20 Modern are wholly inadequate for simulating the world of RIFTS, and most of what people create for other settings is wildly inconsistent, from one game to the next, to find much of use in other supplements...

You guys must be thinking of 1st ed. of Darwin's World which has problems. Darwin's World Second ed. is really great and is designed for the D20 modern rules. It is simply the best D20 Modern supplement out there (my opinion). The 1st edition was more like a beta version but 2nd is the real thing baby. Also it would be easy to use many of the rules D20 Apocalypse in Darwin's word.
