Yep, curious to see what folk think about the game, especially from someone who's new to SR, or who was turned off previous editions by the rules.
Raises hand. Strangely, I've owned all 3 editions of SR. I have no idea why. I guess I kinda like the idea/setting but the fantasy aspect tends to get dropped pretty quickly. I played with a psycho gamer friend who absolutely loved SR...I guess it was infectious.
Anyhow, can't get past the rules. Horrible, horrible mess. It's classic late 80s game design at its worst. With that said, I'll be on the lookout for when SR makes it to my FLGS.
Which would be when, again?

Shadowrun 2 was what got me off of D&D finally so I am hoping SR4 is just as good. I really didn't like SR3, it was just off for some reason and I really didn't like the lack of critters.
Ah, Shadowrun... Both my younger brother and I loved the system (me more). It had fantasy and scifi all rolled into one! The storyline was set in the future, and had a fairly solid rationale for why there's magic. The corp-domination angle was very well thought out, and it seemed to me that everything fit together pretty well, from Dunkelzahn to Renraku. Classes were much less defined than in, say, AD&D 2nd edition (what we started on, ages ago ^_^)... and you could be a hacker, a cybernetic killer, or a kung-fu ninja.
From what my friend at GenCon who played in 2 games tells me:
1. Dice pools are much smaller, but uberspecialized professionals can still hit like 15 in a roll.
2. Combat is a LOT deadlier.
3. Runners (Or the examples out of the book) tend to have a lot of addictions and personal problems...maybe to make them more realistic, but it's interesting.
4. Cyberspace is VERY much like Cybergen's old Virtuality now and the hackers work much like the 'Wizards' in that system.
I have a stack of barely used 3rd edition I would trade in a heart beat. I will even through in some old 1st edition stuff. The 4 months my RPG group played Shadowrun was pure he!!. I loved the setting but the game mechanics severely hampered any enjoyment. From what little I have read 4th edition did not simplify the game mechanics much.
Mcb
PS I am serious about trading my Shadowrun books, I’m looking for Heavy Gear, D20 modern stuff, or old Battletech stuff. Drop my a PM if interested.
