HERO System included?

Does this book contain enough of the HERO system to run it, or would you also need the HERO core book.

I guess I am asking if this is a stand-alone product.

HERO's genre books are not stand-alone. You'll need a core book of some sort to run a game. If you want to use HERO 5th, that would either be the enormous textbook or HERO Sidekick. However, it looks like you'd do just fine using the corebook of another system.

For example, I intend to use it as an idea mine for Mutants & Masterminds.

As a suggestion it is generally considered rude and a sign of disrespect to refer to someone by their last name alone. If you can spend the time typing the review you can spend the time typing "Steve" or "Mr." in front of "Long" as well.

I picked up Champions and Fantasy HERO way in advance of actually buying the main HERO book, so I'd agree with Carmen. It sounds pretty useful for other games.

That said, the HERO Sidekick is available on RPGnow for only $7, and is about as much of a corebook as you probably need if you're running Pulp HERO, from what I've heard.

No, it's not. It's a perfectly ordinary academic convention.
