I don't really get the "Lovecraftian" angle of this game. Pleasing evil supernatural overlords by tempting or tormenting humans means that humans matter a great deal in the setting -- the exact opposite of Lovecraftian horror.

What do you mean by "abstraction"? Do you mean the game hinges more on character interaction instead of item fetishization? Or are you talking about some kind of "meta" play?
