[RPG]: Midway City, reviewed by indra (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11640.phtml

Daniel Bayn's Summary:

Midway City is an anachronistic sci-fi setting where mutant mobsters and psychic half-breeds wage covert war against a tyrannical regime of cybered-up G-men. It's also a full-featured RPG core book whose every page drips with noir style.

Good review, Daniel! You give a very nice overview, and my interest in the game only grows. I eagerly await the arrival of my own review copy.

One very minor criticism: I'd suggest avoid using exclamation points if at all possible. While there's nothing at all wrong with being enthusiastic about a game you're reviewing, I find that exclamation points make the review start to sound less like a review and more like promotional copy.

I'm interested in your mention of masked vigilantes in the setting, as this is the first I've heard of them. Do these guys use the various powers available in the setting to simulate semi-super pulp heroes like the Shadow? (Or does the setting even make that much of them?)

Dumb question

Uh, where can we get a hold of this game?

I couldn't find a link to the actual product anywhere, is it only available for review right now?

Thanks

I'll take it into consideration, but at least I didn't write, "this game ROXXORS!!!! W00t!!!"... which is what I was feeling inside ;)

It's never explicitly called out as a character type, but a guy called The Vapour is mentioned a few times. He uses gas weapons to knock out and evade from his enemies :) Things like The Shadow and (I think) Batman are referenced a number of times in the more OOC sections, though. Oh, and one of the sample characters is a mystic kung-fu vigilante.

In other words, it's not the main focus of the game (which is film noir with a cyberpunk sheen), but it's sell-supported as a narrative structure.

My understanding is that it should be available in the coming weeks, but I'm sure Eddy will chime in with actual information soon enough...

There's a reference to one masked vigilante in the game (The Vapor) as a set-up for a minor faction of rebels (The Vapor's Agents). I'm hoping to expand on him and his exploits in a future book, but the book doesn't explicitly details rules/mechanics for vigilantes.

The main website is here: http://www.spectrum-games.com/midwaycity

The book got off the presses a few days ago, so it should be in the distribution chain momentarily. It should be available for order in the next couple of weeks. I know you can pre-order it from paizo.com, and it will be available at zmangames.com as well once we get it in.

Right. Vigilantes are a perfectly viable concept, but the pulp elements are a more subtle ingrediant to the heavy noir/cyberpunk flavor.

My plan is to set up for running the game is aimed at a Doc Savage setup/Spider setup where the pc's are his agents, he disapears/dies whatever, furthuring them to act in more active roles rather than just the "research/investigative" sorts he'd been using them for.

That's actually very similar to the idea I had for the Vapor seeds in the Movement book I have vaguely planned out in my head. So of course I think it's an awesome idea!
