Are alternate difficulties given for using say, 2d6? Other polyhedrals? How is that handled?

It works like this. The attribute pair total is equal to the highest a single die can roll. The difficulty is equal to 1.5 times the highest a die can roll. So, for 2d6, the attribute pairs add up to 6 and the difficulty is 9.

Very nice review.
So do I understand correctly that there's no way for any given monster to do more "damage" than any other -- only to be more <u>likely</u> to cause damage?

Ditto -- thanks for the review, Eddy!
And Dan, monsters have access to Creature and Advanced Specialisations. Some of these specialisations allow them to do additional damage -- to inflict additional Survival Point loss on a successful Conflict Check.
But creatures can be made truly formidable and deadly without those specific specialisations . . . .
If you've got the time and interest, I'd love to see an Actual Play review from you and your group.
Merwin

I'd be glad to, Merwin! I can't promise a timeframe, but I'd love to take a look at the game. You can contact me via PM, if you like.
