Re: [RPG]: Army of Darkness, reviewed by Evan Waters (5/5)
Great review, Evan!
What aspects of the rules would you say most encourage the style of the movies as opposed to the styles of Buffy/Angel?

Thanks for the review! I may just pick this up.

I don't mean to speak for Evan, but I'm working on my own review of this game for my website, so just to jump in...
Some of the qualities and drawbacks (some of which Evan mentioned) encourage the type of playing seen in the films. Big/ Really Big Chin, Schmuck, Clown, all (if played correctly) mimick the facets of the movie characters' personalities that you won't see in a Buffy episode.
But realistically, it's just the mindset of the players. I really enjoyed the Buffy rules (wish I hadn't sold my book!), and I could have developed an Evil Dead campaign just using that. So, technically, it's not so much what's in the rules that makes this different from Angel, Buffy, et al., but how PC personalities are designed and whether you like campy vampire stories of campy demon stories.
But the mass combat system is sweet, and that's not in the other core books...

Well, the differences there are fairly subtle. The Qualities and Drawbacks are different; some, like "Big Chin" and "Tool Man" are new, some Qualities in BUFFY or ANGEL aren't in AoD, some are in two books but not the third ("Outcast" is in ANGEL and AoD, but the point value is different). Vehicles are in AoD and ANGEL but not BUFFY.
AoD doesn't really have "Magic" rules per se- there's no Sorcery Quality, and the three spells listed for the Necronomicon require no effort to cast (unless the character is a Schmuck.)
Basically it's a question of what bits and pieces they took from the Unisystem- it has more weapon listings than the other two core books, and focuses more on the smashy, bloody stuff (and the only problem with guns is that you might run out of ammo.)

Great review! Might get this for a friend of mine who's a huge Bruce Campbell fan.
One question--you mention the Back Stabber, "a nasty little knife which appears throughout the trilogy." Admittedly it's been a while since I've seen the movies, but I don't remember that. Where does it appear?

In EVIL DEAD they find it alongside the Necronomicon and the tapes in the basement- later Ash is stabbed with it by one of the possessed girls.
I'm not sure of where it was in EVIL DEAD 2- I think it comes into play in the climax- and I'm completely unsure of where it is in ARMY OF DARKNESS, but it has to be there or else they wouldn't have been able to mention it.
It's the knife with the skull on the handle.

Empire of Satanis... double standard or what? all i got was, 'this game's too rough, evil, and low brow' or something. sheesh.

No, it was "this game's too puerile and takes itself far too seriously."
ARMY OF DARKNESS knows it's cheesy. It knows it's high camp, that it's an action comedy rather than a philsophy of life.
But thanks for being such a good sport.
