[Board/Tactical Game]: Formula De, reviewed by ShannonA (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/12/12040.phtml

Shannon Appelcline's Summary:

An excellent roll-and-move racing car game that mixes interesting tactics, brinkmanship, and a fair amount of luck. Probably the best of its class.

In your opinion, does the fact that the 'new' version of the game uses different dice for different gears instead of d20s for all gears change its gameplay or feel in any way?

I've played both versions and I keep having the niggling feeling the d20 version plays differently. But maybe I'm wrong...

I've never played the d20 version - I assume this was before they had enough money to afford making their own dice? It would depend on if the odds changed any between the d20 (and, I assume, table lookup) and the multi-dice.

Personally, I love the multi-dice because you feel like you're in a fast gear when you're rolling a nice big d20/d30 as opposed to a slow little d4/d6.

(Just watch out you don't mix up the dice with your RPG dice. We almost had a TPK one day in D&D until we realized the d20 the GM was using was in fact from Formula De, which meant it was rolling only 11-20!)

I pretty much agree. The difference dice are nice & evocative, but then I've never played with the (much older) all d20 dice.

Thanks to both of you. I'm pretty sure it was an imagined slight on my part, but I figured I'd ask anyway, on the off-chance that you'd played the first (French) version of the game...

I'm ashamed to say that although I love the game to death I still need to buy it for myself. A game-moocher is I...
