This simple yet elegant game is many things to many people. It also is one of the best supplements for Insert Your Favorite Game Here on the market.
This sounds like an interesting hybrid of roleplaying game and storytelling game.

One minor detail that's always bugged me:
What TV show in existence has ever had seasons running 5 or 9 episodes? They come in 6, 12, 13, 22, 24- the only time I'd expect 5 or 9 is if the show gets cancelled abruptly.
I know there's a mechanical reason for this set-up, but for some reason it hurts the simulation factor.

Damn good review!
I probably agree with you on every point, although I'd rank PTA at 4/4 - but I haven't seen the revised version, so that might change.
I think it is very important to stress the good GM and players aspect. PTA is pretty loose and as such, with a group that doesn't "gel" it wont present the same level of fun. You need to have a GM who is on the ball and a group of players who can play off each other well for it to really deliver, IMO.
Still, there are things about it I like - and I'm warming up more and more to it as a game in general. Namely because I have a couple of groups now who I feel would really make PTA rock.

It's easy enough to emulate an average full season (24 eps) by stringing three "5's" and one "9" together or three "9's" for a slightly longer season than normal (I think most US seasons last 22-26 eps).
That said, it bugged me a bit, too. The author's point is that most groups wouldn't play a full season, but I still would've liked to see it "canonized" in the rules for us ambitious players!

My understanding of a lot of shows like Lost, Angel and Buffy which are 22 episodes may be broken down into arcs of roughly 9-5-9.

I agree that calling them seasons might have been the wrong word choice, but I feel its a bit nitpicky to call the game on. I appreciated the fact that these games are meant for smaller runs, but there's no Game Police enforcing that on players. I think I'd be happier with a bunch of short runs of different show than with a long run of one single show. Under the current system, its easier to go short then long rather than the other way around.

Let's be honest here. The only good stuff on TV gets cancelled to make way for Sitcom Mark MMMMCCXLII

Actually, when my group played PTA, we all agreed at the beginning that our show was a mid-season replacement that gathered a cult following but didn't do well in the ratings. As a result, it was cancelled pretty quickly, but the DVD sales are strong.
