I was wondering whether the author of this review has since played or at least read previous editions of Shadowrun, I am just curious because the review uses terms like "Physical Adept" (the "Physical" bit got dropped in 3rd ed) and "chummer" which got dropped in 4th Edition along with all the Frags and Dreks.

I have yet to actually play any prior forms of Shadowrun. However, I have done a lot of research into Shadowrun net peripherals and visited the Dumpshock forums a good number of times, which I how I picked up on the slang of prior editions.

Dude, he spent a paragraph of the review telling you that he hasn't.
Even so Justin, excellent review. Thank you for your insights into the game. As a long time Shadowrunner, I found your newness to the experience refreshing and worthwhile.

Er, no he actually didn't. He said that had never played Shadowrun before picking up up 4th edition. DigitalMage asked whether he had played any of the earlier editions since that time.
Anyway, very impressive review, especially for a first time. One question, though:
Quote:
Just because I’d never gotten my hands on it didn’t mean I couldn’t love the idea behind the setting. I’d often describe the line to friends as, “Imagine if a Neal Stephenson novel and a D&D adventure module had hot, sweaty unprotected sex.” That’s not entirely appropriate, of course, as I’ve since learned,
Why do you say that? It seems like a fairly appropriate metaphor to me (albeit rather vulgar for my taste).

Well, I imagined it would be more of a blend of the grim yet optimistic setting of cyberpunk and the standard heroic tropes of fantasy, but, at the time I wrote that review, it seemed more like 75% cyberpunk, 25% fantasy. Of course, now that I've done a bit more research, I can see how they're a more even blend.
And yeah, now I realize how vulgar that metaphor was. From now, I'll just say, "...married and had a bouncing baby wired elf."

Re: [RPG]: Shadowrun 4th Edition, reviewed by JustinCognito (3/4)
How much « fluff » information is in the book, compared to « crunch » rules ?
By fluff I mean not only setting specific info, but also what’s it like to live in the Shadowrun universe in a day-to-day basis. For example : are there any highways or freeways still existing between cities ? Is everyone allowed to carry a firearm, or do you need a permit of some kind ? That kind of fluff info.
Also, how much 4th edition is compatible with previous books ? Is Fan Pro trying to “rebuild” the line from scratch by drastically changing their dice system ?

There's a lot of general info. Legal information is sketchy, though, where it exists at all. As for firearms, nearly everyone can carry a pistol, but anything heavier requires a permit when it's not downright illegal.

Not much, and it seems to be deliberately so. While 3rd edition kept the weapon damage codes from 2nd, SR4/nSR uses a completely different system for such, and armor is the same way. Conversions could be worked out, probably, but it does seem like FanPro was careful to not let FASA's books inhibit future book sales.
