I can see the similarities to Scarab Lords.

For whatever reason, SL never particularly enthused me. It implied a depth of play, but the actual play seemed quite basic. I need to play it again sometimes I suppose.

Suffice to say, I liked KoC more. I'm not sure it's deeper, but it plays simply and well.
