[RPG]: Tatters of the King, reviewed by Benedict (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/12/12548.phtml

Ben Chapman's Summary:

Tatters of the King takes the basic themes of Call of Cthulhu and does them right to create a highly atmospheric adventure.

Is there really a cultist named Bacon? Do they hang out with Lettuce and Tomato?

I should add the review was well done, too. Thanks for that.

I prefer my bacon with scrambled eggs and toast.

Y'know, I wonder if the names of the cultists are supposed to relate to their role in the adventure somehow. For example, Quarrie is chased half way around the world and Bacon certainly gets his bacon cooked (or is that too oblique?).

As one of the players in Ben's game I would like to add that Ben does himself a disservice with some of his comments. He did a masterful job in the GM's chair!

The feel of the adventure really is excellent. There is a genuine sense of disquiet and unease and the level of tension is manipulated beautifully.

The NPCs are also so well done and so believable that it is painful. One of our PCs went on what was sure to be (and was) a suicide mission to avenge the death of a cultist and the rest of us couldn't bring ourselves to stop the main "bad guy" (or perhaps "well-meaning but misled guy" would be a better term). In fact, as Ben mentions, we ended up fighting amongst ourselves over whether to stop him or not - even though we all knew what a terrible thing it was that he wanted to do.

I'm really glad to have read this review as I am anxiously awaiting this book along with my copy of the Malleus Monstrorum hard cover edition. Now I'm even more anxious. Excellent review!
