Relations to other games: the Santa Fe family of games is a close cousin to Wildlife Adventure (aka Expedition, Terra-X), which is a bit lighter but has the same mechanism of multiple (three) routes that no one owns and everyone extends over the course of the game.

Cool. I've been wanting to try those for a while, but they just don't seem to circulate in the gaming club I regularly attend.
