An incredible product from start to finish, Spirit of the Century is extremely creative, fun to read, and filled with fast paced Pulp adventure all the way through!
Re: [RPG]: Spirit of the Century, reviewed by C.W.Richeson (5/5)
Good review - SotC has got a lot going for it, and IMO can be applied to pulp-related genres such as sword and sorcery, westerns, etc.
Have you got yours in the mail already? I'm hoping that means my copy will be around soon ...
I just wanted to correct one thing:
Quote:
Beating a difficulty in SotC can result in Spin for every point the difficulty is defeated by. So, for example, a character with a total value of 5 going against a difficulty of 1 generates 4 Spin. This can be used to speed up tasks, increase the degree of success (a ‘just barely’ becomes a complete, fantastic success), and other similar benefits.
In this paragraph, replace the word "Spin" with "Shifts." "Spin" (p 79) is a particularly good roll that has generate 3 or more Shifts. In particular, when you gain Spin on a good defensive roll, it gives a bonus (if ally) or penalty (if enemy) on the next action after yours.

I don't believe the books are shipping until early in November. Not that far away but still not 'in the mail' at this point. But, I have my PDF to tide me over (Good customer service that is )

Something I don't understand about this, maybe I'm reading it wrong. In the review
it says,
Quote:
"Example: Penny wants to hit the bullseye on a dart board. The GM decides this is a Superb (+5) Difficulty that will be based off the Athletics skill. Penny has Athletics at Good (+2) so she will need at least a +2 on her roll in order to succeed. The player rolls “-“, “+”, “+”, “+,” not quite enough unless she spends a Fate Point!"
First off, I don't have the SotC pdf, but unless they changed the ladder from the the Fate 2.0 docs, a Superb is a +4 not a +5. I would interpret this as requiring a +2 to succeed as noted above. The roll “-“, “+”, “+”, “+,” in my interpretation is a success. The positive and the negative cancel eachother out and you are left with two positives(+2). Am I right or way off? I haven't ever played any Fudge or Fate based games, but I'm very interested. I just hope the rules are clear and consistent in play.

The numbers for the adjectives have shifted slightly between Fate 2.0 and Fate 3.0 for... well, for esoteric and aesthetic reasons. But I'm on very little sleep and not in a position to closely examine the example just right now.
Thanks very much for the review -- fantastically in-depth, and very flattering.

Medicore (+0), Average (+1), Fair (+2), Good (+3), Great (+4), Superb (+5) according to page 8 of Spirit of the Century. I hope that helps! It's very clear and easy to understand all the way through.

Excellent review, CWR! I like the way you list the number of pages alloted to each topic.
Regarding the game itself, I also like the idea of having starring and guest-starring roles in pulp novels as part of the character creation process. It helps answer the problem of pulp heroes "teaming up," which wasn't really all that common in the two-fisted adventure subgenre, AFAIK.

I also like it because it starts the game by telling players "sometimes you'll be the star and sometimes you'll be a supporting character and thats okay cause you always be cool."
