Re: [Board/Tactical Game]: Pax Galacticum, reviewed by Matt Drake (4/5)
Just bought Battlestations after reading a few reviews(including Tom's). Haven't had a chance to play it yet. The rulebook seems to be good in content and quality, but it's almost like learning another roleplaying system. Something I haven't been keen on at the ripe old age of 36! :-) I'm already playing the Savage Worlds RPG, as well as D&D, and a few other flavorful games like Shadowrun, etc., but by and large Savage Worlds. As I get older, I find I like simplicity. Either way, I'm going to trudge hip deep into Battlestations. Can't comment on how well the game plays, but I'm not crazy about the cardboard characters. I think it's an issue of size and quality. I actually use a lot of cardboard mini's with rpg's, but these fall short. Otherwise, I'm happy with the rest of the components, the rulebook, and the box. I'll probably check back after I've played a few games. Good review. Tylermo P.S. I'm sure you've seen the metal mini's for Battlestations. I may eventually plunk the money down for those, if I like the game enough. Just a shame that they're not the size of a D&D or Heroscape mini.

Unlike tylermo, I'm not 15mm averse, although the humans in the official range are a little "oddly proportioned", IMO -- nothing to stop me using my SG2 or Laserburn minis for games of Battlestations!
Anyway, thanks for the review, Matt. This is a supplement that I've been awaiting eagerly ever since I saw it in the Battlestations release schedule. I've wanted a space emergency rescue game for a couple of years now.
One question (for now): does Pax Galacticum require the first supplement at all? Or is it completely stand alone (apart from the main rules)?

They plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a desert, they call it peace - Tacitus, Agricola 30.
But we didst fail him; for while the NewStyle line gained critical acclaim they didst not change the way we roleplayed. - Authorised Book of James, Creation, 4.5

Sorry I didn't reply sooner - busy week.
You absolutely do not need Galactic Civil War to play Pax Galacticum. After you get Pax Galacticum, you'll want GCW, but only because you'll realize what an awesome game you've got. The module is completely playable with just the core game and the supplement. And it's fun.

Thanks. I've placed an order at my FLGS.
(And it's now my turn to apologize for not replying sooner -- and, to my embarrassment, I didn't have a particularly busy week. )
