Re: [RPG]: Roanoke, reviewed by Tomb's Grave (4/4)
So where exactly IS ranoke? I mean, you mention its a colony and all, but where exatly is it? Earth? Some fantasy world? What timeperiod (past/;present/future?)
Last, are there any spells and such for pc's to use?

The Roanoke colony was the first English colony in North America, established in the 16th century. It vanished without a trace, and is a very famous piece of American and British history. The reviewer probably assumed everyone was familiar with the story, and I was despite being Anglo-Danish, but yes, that is possibly a dangerous assumption as we have many non-American and British forum users.

Exciting setting. Olivier Legrand, author of an interesting RPG take on Solomon Kane, described in details the Roanoke stuff as a possible place of adventure.

With the Wushu system, the characters describe what they do (based on what they CAN do, defined by their abilities), and it happens. There's no set spell list.
There IS a guide as to what kind of magic is appropriate--weather-changing, conversing with plants, turnin' into animals, warding against bullets and arrows, things like that.

My gaming group and I have "Gamer Thanksgiving" every year, complete with a viewing of the movie "Ravenous." So I knew this had to be part of it.
One of our number bought Roanoke and ran it after the movie, and it was a lot of fun! The narrative mechanic was sometimes a little stilted as people felt obliged to put "six things" into each of their action descriptions, but the game was very enjoyable overall. We used the pregen characters (I was the Indian).
Not sure about a long campaign; the setup is suited to a short one-shot, but heck, it's a great value for an afternoon of fun for 6 people!
