I pulled out Dragonland this weekend for the first time in a while. It has a dice tower, or rather a "destiny tower" (the dice are called "destiny cubes"). I found two problems: one is that not everyone could reach the tower, so the guy closest to the tower became the "destiny cube dropper". This seems less satisfying than being able to roll your own dice. The second problem is that we usually use the event of passing the dice to signify the end of one's turn, and you can't do this with a dice tower. I guess you could solve both of these problems by either passing the whole dice tower, or by having one tower per player, but neither of these seem optimal. (The latter problem also came up when using the Settlers of Catan Event Cards. There it's a little easier to pass the event cards deck (and discard pile) to signify the end of your turn, but it's still more awkward than passing dice.)

Most of the games I played were 2 or 3 players. Definitely if you had 4 or 5, you'd need a second dice tower or something like you describe.
