If (When) WOTC decides to publish a science fiction RPG, do you think it will be a supplement to D20 Modern or will they approach it from a new D20 Core Book perspective ?
Granted, I haven't read D20 modern, so I don't know if it can inherently cover the future genre (space travel, aliens, etc.). With that in mind, please take my question with a grain of salt.
Cheers.

I was thinking more along the lines of a 'generic' future RPG as opposed to a licensed product.

d20 Modern is smelly and bad. Almost any other d20 product would be a better core to start with.
Besides, I think there's a limited market for Arnold in Space, Alien knockoffs, and Spelljammer meets 40K settings. d20 Modern is high action, high firepower.
I don't think so long as WotC has the D20 SW license, they will put out a generic D20 future book.
The might do a "sort futuristic" setting like something cyberpunkish, but they are so paranoid about self-competition that I do not see them making a space opera type game.
Of course, if you want d20 future, simply go to the website of THE d20 future game: www.d20future.com
P.S. Didn't we just have this thread? That's okay, I'll just think of this thread as the "vapid assertion" free version for the moment.
Good point Sangrolu. You are probably right about WoTC not producing a D20 future product while Star Wars is around - hell, that may even be a part of the license agreement with Lucas.
By the way, I try to read the forums every day - so if this is a repeat of a previous thread, my apologies...I must have missed it.

I've never understood the dislike for D20 modern. The class system is perfect for modern day and future settings, where people tend to be less focused on their profession. Now, the names could be better, certainly.
That being said, there should be some changes to d20 modern for future settings. First of all, the defense system needs to be overhauled. "Modern" and future armor does not increase the difficulty to hit, it absorbs some amount of damage. More realistic armor would absorb damage while making you easier to hit. (people don't dodge in full body armor-- at least not well).
Secondly, I know some people don't like the massive damage rules-- I don't have the same problem with them. When someones shot, they very often drop on the spot. But, IMHO, working something like wound levels-- say divide HP by 4 and at each 25 percent you take penalties to act, that would be a nice optional rule.
Oh, and my biggest complaint with D20 modern. if you do d20 future, please, please, please, don't waste space with two settings where the difference could be summed up as: In Shadow chasers everything wants to kill you, in Modern Arcana, some things are friendly.
Well, there's always *cough* Dragonstar. I'm not too enthused about it, but then again I haven't read the actual books (Just reviews and summaries).
On the other hand, I must be in a game of it at some point, so that I can play a Gundancer (John Woo-style two fisted brawler/gunman PrC).
Dragonstar isn't nearly as generic as d20 Modern, but I think as long as it's out there (not to mention SW d20), it'll fill the niche of "generic futuristic d20 game" in spite of its less-than-generic setting and classes. Making d20 Future would be like making d20 Fantasy, and WoTC doesn't often shoot themselves in the foot like that.
