A dungeon crawl, but it is a fairly good one. Terribly underdeveloped setting-wise, but with opportunities to place in a wider campaign. The challenges are of appropriate difficulty overall. An acceptable product.
Re: [RPG]: Slave Pits of the Undercity, reviewed by Lev Lafayette (3/3)
Oh, boy! Do I have some good memories of this module or what?
The upper level makes little sense as a building, but it was chock full of suspense. My players was way ahead of me when I DM'ed it, so they started to feel it was a bit easy. Then they got down and met the insectoids and were so sure of themself that one of them got killed! They were so cautious after that they never dared confront the orcs! I had them here some drums and that scared them blue!
What memories...
The follow up modules were just as fun. I think they were just as developed as they needed to be, and leaved lots of space for my personal inventions.

Lev,
I think you're pretty spot on with your reviews. This one is no exception. This one, though it has a lot of nostalgia, is really just an average dungeon crawl. Some adaptation (and invention) was needed to make it more than that.
Thanks for bringing these out. I am pleased that you were able to adapt them so successfully. I am curious though, are you running them with AD&D 1E or another system?
Cheers,

We're running the modules using AD&D 1E an explicitly entitled campaign "RetroAD&D". We started with the U series in Cornwall, moved into the A series (Scilly Isles then Moorish Spain), we'll go back to the British Isles for the Giants (Wales, Scotland and Iceland) and haven't decided about the Drow or Queen Spider yet...
Next year I think we might do a Planescape campaign and (shock - horror) upgrade the survivors to AD&D 2nd ed!
