[Board/Tactical Game]: Runebound: Sands of Al-Kalim, reviewed by ShannonA (5/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/12/12889.phtml

Shannon Appelcline's Summary:

A supplement for Runebound with a very different setting that also changes the victory conditions sufficiently to make the game feel quite different.

Re: [Board/Tactical Game]: Runebound: Sands of Al-Kalim, reviewed by ShannonA (5/3)

My wife and I love Runebound and the boxed expansion that introduces water travel (I forget the name offhand). We bought Sands of Al-Kalim and played it once, but we didn't even finish that game. My impression is that this expansion adds too much stuff -- it feels like there's just one too many things to keep track of (sandstorm movement; day or night travel; etc), and that makes the game feel more cumbersome to me. It also seemed that the game was going to take a good bit longer than regular Runebound, which is already a lengthy game.

We'll probably try it again eventually, and maybe we'll warm up to it, but our first impression is that it adds more "work" to the game that isn't necessarily worth the trouble.

Sands of Al-Kalim is our favorite Runebound expansion so far. We really, really liked the change in the endgame (Runebounds weakest aspect IMO). We also liked the Isle of Dread but it introduced a whole new round of endgame problems if you have players who hoard map pieces.

Nice review!
