[RPG]: GURPS Bunnies & Burrows, reviewed by Lev Lafayette (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/12/12907.phtml

Lev Lafayette's Summary:

Funny, insightful, educational, detailed, clever, cute, readable, and presentable. Many fine gaming sessions can be achieved from this book - if you don't mind roleplaying an intelligent rabbit.

Older Roots

GURPS Bunnies & Burrows is a more modern take on the old Bunnies & Burrows RPG by B. Dennis Sustare, an innovative designer whose contributions to the roleplaying hobby were numerous (and often forgotten today). The inside of the book itself mentions more on the subject. I'm still looking for a copy of this very rare game.

I'm a huge fan of Bunnies and Burrows and treasure my 1976 book. Sorry to taunt you! It blew my mind at the time, both thematically and mechanically.

Yeah, sure you are...

On a related subject, B&B was released only a couple of years after Richard Adams' famous story Watership Down. Coincidence? I guess only Dennis would know. Even if you're not a B&B fan, it's worth checking out.

That was my first thought when I heard about it: Watership Down, or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Later, I also thought it might be amusing as a system for Redwall.

He takes great pains to differentiate the setting, and the illustrations in the original game are a real departure - there are rabbits riding hares, carrying pikes, a king with sunglasses on - it's pretty wild.
