[RPG]: Monsters and Other Childish Things, reviewed by The Unshaven (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13007.phtml

The Unshaven's Summary:

Startlingly impressive, rich and simple system with a brilliant underlying concept. Anyone who enjoys black humour, Calvin & Hobbes, and Lovecraftian horrors will find this worth a look.

Nice. I've been working (off and on) on a game with similar themes. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's interested in this subject matter.

Huh. I just might have to pick this up, at least as a PDF. It seems similar in several ways to "Little Fears" which I enjoyed greatly.

So let's make this clear, can or can't you play this game wihtout any other ORE books? (the review made it sound like you could, but I'm not certain.)

Yes, you can.

That's the part that was bugging me up until I bought and read it. It's really misleading to say that it needs another book, 'cause it really doesn't. In fact, I would probably suggest that adding Wild Talents to the mix complicates things, and gets away from the simple (child-like) approach. The game system presented is sufficient to play the game, and it is a very flavourful way to do it, as well.

Re: [RPG]: Monsters and Other Childish Things, reviewed by The Unshaven (5/4)

Thanks for the review. I'm very glad players are able to have a good time with Monsters without Wild Talents or a big core book. It was important for us to include language saying one of the other books is necessary, because the rules kind of gloss over some issues and we didn't want to risk players feeling cheated. But Ben did such a good job summarizing the key rules areas that the warning is largely unnecessary.

If anyone wants to post Actual Play, I would be very interested to see what players with or without prior exposure to Wild Talents, etc., thought of it. I mean, I personally love the heck out of it, but then I wouldn't have published it if I didn't....

Thanks for the review, sounds like a great game. I'll probably at least get the PDF...

Just wondering, as a Wild Talents player, would any of the things in Monsters transfer over to WT? E.g. could you tweak the Monster creation system to make creepy opponents for your WT players to face?

There's actually a section in Monsters which gives you advice on just that.

Re: [RPG]: Monsters and Other Childish Things, reviewed by The Unshaven (5/4)

Ok, I bought this and really, really love it. It's extremely funny to read, and the ideas are first class. I love the illustrations for their combination of creepy and childlike. One tiny criticism. There are a lot of grammatical errors that appear to have been left after a tense change in the sentence or a quick rewrite, leaving little artifacts behind in the language. So it could have been edited better. Also, and this may just be a Macintosh problem, but the pdf converts every occurence of "Th" to the ligature "ff". It makes the reading a little lispy. Let me know when you re-edit it. I'd like a copy. But for now, it's so good that I don't mind the errors. Seriously.
