City Built on the Body of a Dead God

From the Manual of the Planes on Tu'narath:

"It is built on the body of a diety that had been dead for eons when the githyanki first came to the Astral Plane."

"The city is cosmopolitan enough to host othe races in their own quarters: bariaurs, humans and a few fiendish races."

"The leader of all of the Githyanki, the liche queen, dwells here, rarely leaving the inner sanctum of her gigantic palace. The palace is carved from what may have been the forehead of the gargantuan diety upon which Tu'narath is nestled."

This is a thread on adventure seeds and hooks for Tu'narath, capitol city of the coolest D&D species ever: the Githyanki.

Players could be:

- a fiendish mercenary company, fresh out of a brutal campaign in the Blood Wars, looking for easier work for the liche queen.

- ambassadors from a Red Dragon, with whom the Githyanki have an ancient binding pact. A Red Dragon, upon reaching adulthood, may request a legion of Githyanki soldiers for a time or a deed. You are here to gain soldiers for your Red Lord's host, so that he might breath fire on the thrones of the world and make a planet his hoard.

- an elite investigative team, yes, CSI: Tun'narath.

- doomed Githzarai spies, deeper undercover than any Githzarai in history, posing as humans in the Prime Material Ghetto, built on the diety's well guarded left foot.

- Githyanki generals, planning your next attack on a hapless world with five thousand Githyanki ground soldiers and 10 wings of Red Dragon Air Calvalry.

- the liche queen's courtiers, looking over the reports from throughout the planes, choosing her next subject who will give his or her life for the glory of the eternal liche queen.

- a secret cult that worships the dead god the city was built upon.

- minions of Vecna, newly arrived in the city with a proposition for a ghastly wedding, a union that would change the planes forever.

phew, I feel better...

Cool!

- Githyankis approaching the power that will gain the attention of the Liche Queen. Laying plans to usurp her rule. Pulling in mercenaries and powerful individuals from other planes to help.

NPC's of Tu'narath:

- The grizzled swordsmaster who teaches the young Githyanki stories of ancient Gith, the glories of the liche queen and how to wield a Silver Sword.

- A fugitive Silversmith who escaped from his smithy deep in the liche queen's palace and wishes to escape. Wrapped in rags is his finest blade, a two-handed Silver Sword forged in Red Dragon's breath, blade quenched in Githzarai blood. He is looking for a way off-plane with his sword.

- An intelligent silver sword, wrapped in rags on the back of a fugitive silversmith, looking for a Githyanki warrior who will make the blade a legend.

Players could be (more):

- the crew of a Githyanki Astral Ship, The Queen's Spite, transporting an Illithid hunting party to a dangerous plane where the last remnants of the ancient and once-plane spanning Illithid Empire is said to hide under a blue sun.

- a high level adventuring party here to collect the liche queen's legendary bounty on four score Illithid heads taken in a recent tomb raid. I see an extra planar bar fight with fiends and brutal Githyanki City Watch officers...and a really tempting dungeon: The Liche Queen's Palace.

- Young red dragons here to serve in the Githyanki Air Calvalry.

- A band of necromancers from across the planes who hope to use the living city as a sacrifice to animate the body of a dead god as the greatest weapon in the planes.

You could riff off of the "City Built around the Tarrasque" thread and say that not all the god's body is dead - perhaps certain organs are still alive and it's divine ichor does weird things to people who drink it.

Paka, you're the man. You're also absolutely correct about the Githyanki; coolest D&D species ever.

Parasites. Hideous, unnatural things battened on the rotting flesh of a dead god, and made horribly glorious thereby.

Things that have begun to burrow out of the corpse that has housed them for so long....

Re: City Built on the Body of a Dead God

- The deranged avatar of a mad god, ancient foe of the dead deity and now on the verge of death himself, arrives as a whirlwind of destruction. He knows his own demise is at hand, but not before destroying the last feeble remnants of his enemy of old.

Re: City Built on the Body of a Dead God

There are some great ideas here! I recommend Dungeon 100 as a good resource. There's a huge adventure in which the goal is to slay the Lich Queen. Lots o' bad stuff in that keep of hers.
