[RPG]: Star Thugs, reviewed by The Unshaven (3/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13050.phtml

The Unshaven's Summary:

A comedic and innovative game for space-brawling mayhem in a universe akin to Privateer on mescaline. Although marred by layout problems, this is still value for money.

That's one more game I'd never heard of before. Thanks for the review.

Looking at the sample pdf on the site you linked to, however, I couldn't help notice that... well, let's say the typography could be better.
All right, it's a complete mess. It looks like it was written using Word by someone who, frankly, doesn't have a clue about typography. It's even set in Arial. Hell.

there's a convincingly historical discussion of why ship combat still occurs within visual range, despite the fact this doesn't make logical sense on paper,
Really? Can you sum it up? That's something that might be useful for other space-opera games.

Basically boils down to lack of guaranteeable computer security.

It's impossible to utterly ensure that nobody's going to get into your system and set your weapons to overload, and so there are manual steps in the procedures. ie, gunners. As such, combat is limited to what organic gunners can handle and/or comprehend.

People try it every now and then. Just often enough that there are stories about what happened when Surly Lucas or whoever got cocky and someone irradiated his ship from the inside always circulating in mind.

It's more detailed in the book, but that core concept ties into a lot of other fun things too.
