[RPG]: Call of Cthulhu Sixth Edition, reviewed by merb101 (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13211.phtml

Michael Erb's Summary:

The classic horror game set in Lovecraft's world of dark lore and elder things. Possibly one of the best horror games available, if you are into lengthy investigations, researching old tomes and eventually going insane.

Much of this review reads like a press release.

Also, what are the differences between CoC 6e and 5.6e?

Very, very little. A slightly different font in the titles.

Yep - the difference is all presentation and internal layout, nice though that happens to be.

5.6 is the hard cover version of 5.5 (the blue paperback with Cthulhu in the background)

6.0 is a black and white replica of the green leather bound editions.

I emailed the FAQ guy at chaosium.

Possibly one of them ? Its certainly one of them

I wrote an earlier review of Call of Cthulhu and agree with most of the points raised here. Why though did you not give it 5 out of 5 ?

If you don't think its as good as you could ever expect a RPG to be what do you think could be improved ?

Re: [RPG]: Call of Cthulhu Sixth Edition, reviewed by merb101 (4/4)

The main problem is when you publish a new edition without actually changing anything of substance.

Chaosium has done this for years now.

I realize they need to come out with a new edition once in a while just like everybody else, only I am unhappy to say every new edition since, well, ages ago, has just been a rehash of the previous edition.

It comes across as dishonest, which makes me sad. I really would like to love Chaosium unreservedly, but to do so, they should admit the game is still in it's second edition (or third, at most).

Feel free to repackage, but don't increase the version number, especially the major increment! It only leads existing customers to believe they stand to gain something (anything) by "upgrading", which is less true for CoC than for, well, all other lines I know of!

So, as a game, it certainly is a five star product.

But as an edition, there is no reason whatsoever to upgrade. That's a two star hack job.

Thanks for asking about this. I should have been more clear in my review.

Though I think this is an excellent game, not everyone likes the research- and investigation-heavy gameplay. I have had players that loved the fact most of the monsters were unstoppable through conventional means, while others really disliked this and wanted more monster bashing and less goin' crazy.

I'm still getting my feet under me when it comes to assigning numbers to reviews, as I pretty much just review games I like and enjoy. I don't want to give all of them a 5/5, and the fact is with a new player or someone not familiar with rpgs, I would have them play Spirit of the Century before I'd ever think of showing them CoC.

Thanks again,

ME

As someone who reads and rewrites press releases for a living, I would hope my review read BETTER than a press release

And I was familiar with 4th edition CoC before seeing this one, so I tried to write a general review about the most recent edition, without comparing it to others. I write mostly for an audience who have little to no background in gaming, so they really don't care how it has changed over the years, just some of the reasons they might want to play now.

Hope that helps,

ME

This isn't fair, really. I agree that the 6th Edition had little substantial change from the 5.5 Edition, but there has been considerable development from the 5th Edition. Most significantly, the chapter on Mental Illness has been substantially expanded and modernised.
