Aletheia is a textbook example of how a game does not have to be perfect in order to be a good game you’ll want to play.If you’re a fan of games centered on the paranormal or focussing on investigation, this book is worth every penny you’ll spend for it.
Re: [RPG]: Aletheia, reviewed by Jocelyn Robitaille (3/4)
Hey folks,
When I sent a copy of the review to Lee Foster (one of the authors), we had an exchange that made me realize that there's something in my review that might not have come across as clear as I thought it was.
Concerning the XP awarded to players for formulating an hypothesis at the end of the adventure, I want to set some things straight. At its core, this is a mechanic I like a lot. It underlines the unique mood of Aletheia fairly well, and the players had a blast doing it when I did my playtest. It really lends a sense of resolution to the whole investigation process. Likewise, I understand that correcting the hypothesis is an essential aspect of it that ensures the campaign progresses.
What made me a bit uneasy about the mechanic was that a correction of the hypothesis OOC by the GM might harm suspension of disbelief or feel disempowering for the players. I think it's easily fixable by putting some thought into a page or two of advice, though.
Talking (figuratively) to the author made me realize that this part of the review might come across as if I disliked the mechanic. It's not the case - I like it a lot. Hence, I figured it was worth it to type this up and clarify my position.
That it's. Thanks for reading my review.

Good review Jocelyn, it told me just about all I needed to know - that I must have this game!
One question, though. Heretical thought it sounds, I would be looking to use the setting with either BRP or GURPS (my deeply-ingrained systems). How much do the system and setting rely on each other? From your experience (and I guess the authors can answer this), would a different system cause any major issues?

Good question!
I'd say that the concept of "vital clue" is key, and essential to the flow of the game. If you can find a way to duplicate the "automatic success that keeps the game from getting stuck" effect, I think you're good.

Thanks for reviewing the game. I was trying to do the same... and I got completely stuck. The feelings this game inspire me are too complex to be told with my poor English , but I generally agree with your comments.
I also wanted to review Heaven & Earth, I game I adore (which starts like Twin Peaks and then becomes Carnivàle), but unfortunately my copy is stored in a closet that lies around four thousand kilometres from me, and I don't think it's fair to write a review just using my memory.
Re: [RPG]: Aletheia, reviewed by Jocelyn Robitaille (3/4)
Jill,
I don't think a different system would cause any problems, and I would agree with Jocelyn's point about the automatic successes. As long as you find a means for characters to discover the vital clue to drive adventures forward from scene to scene, you should be good to go.
Joe,
If you want to PM me, I can arrange a review copy for you.
Best,
Lee

Jocelyn,
I think I'm gonna review Aletheia anyway, but you did a wonderful description of the book's contents. Do you mind if I link your review to mine and then I focus on my doubts, concerns and praises about the game? Again, I tried to write something coherent the last two weeks and I didn't succeed .
