Dead of Night doesn't pretend to be something it is not. The horror game was written specifically for pick-up play—quick one-shot adventures that can be up and running in no time. Not much bookkeeping required at all and while simple in design, it is elegant in play.

DoN is indeed a great little game and, to be honest, I really like the small, pocket size of the book. It's something you see very rarely in RPGs and for me, it works.
A good review though, well done. DoN certainly deserves more fans and more people playing it.

Thanks Malcolm for the comments.
I guess I just haven't seen that size format in a RPG before, though I believe the their are pocket-sized versions of Conan and D&D available as well. All-in-all, the game is a blast to play and I do hope they work on an expansion for it.

Thanks for the review and I'm glad you liked the game!
The size of the book is the first thing everyone notices and comments on, and it seems to polarise people - they either love it and want to carry it around with them, or think it's impractical and gimmicky! I guess that's a better response than apathy!

I played this game when I was in Virginia and had a blast. We rocked out with Werewolves and camp and ended up shy of a total party kill only because the cheerleader was wearing 5 pounds of silver jewellery. Lots of fun.
I really love the "initiative" system of the game, the announcements gives a kind of breathless, fast paced and tense feel to the game that is great for doing camp-fire horror.

What I want to do is run a prequel/sequel to THE THING. As I mentioned in the review, I think adding in some kind of trust mechanic (like that in Cold City) and fear-- beyond just the survival points, would make the game perfect for it.
