How many editions of Lacuna Part I are there? Is it just a matter of binding or are there multiple versions?

There is a First and Second Attempt. The first one doesn't have the Static rule, and the attributes are slightly different. Also, it's nicer to look at, from what I understand.

At least two -- I have one with a very different cover, but that was a very short pdf, I think possibly shorter even than the second impression. It's beautifully written but never really convinced me to run it - but I will one day. Inspectres of Octane appeal more - I ran the first and had a blast, and the second is great but did not work for the group I tried it with.
Still Lacuna wins out as one of the most evocative games I can think of - F.W.H. Myers meets the Matrix with a strong dose of Film Noir springs to mind, but you may well read it differently. It also has some really fascinating mechanics.
The first edition book was only slightly expanded compared to the article, and didn't have any of the fancy design additions that the second edition has.

I definitely want to stress that the second attempt is much longer than this original article... More of a full game, not really even a mini-game.
