Re: [RPG]: Spirit of the Century, reviewed by James Gillen (4/4)
The nuts and bolts of SOTC is FATE, not FUDGE. FATE is FUDGE-based, but we're a couple steps removed at this point.

Agreed -- and given that the FATE system is mentioned more than once in the book, the mistake seems... odd.
I could quibble with some misunderstanding of the rules or misuse of terminology, but I accept that not everything's immediately clear on a first read-through. And while the system is, IMO, simple and intuitive, some of the finer points of the mechanics (e.g., the difference between "tagging" and "compelling" an Aspect) can get muddled if everything's new.
But whatever -- thanks for the review. I read this one mostly out of curiosity, as SotC's become my go-to system (used to be HERO, actually) for a variety of games. James, I'm not clear on why you didn't give this a 5/5; I don't think I recall reading a single negative comment, and I'd think "the best pure Pulp game on the market" would warrant a 5 in at least one category.

Oh. Thanks. That should have been obvious, but the root is still pretty clear.

I'm not sure I've given anything a 5 for style, and I usually give stuff like the Hero books 5 for substance only when the book obviously requires really exhaustive detail; SotC is pretty much the opposite of that concept. I'm not sure how to give a book 5 for substance when it doesn't need much.

Because you're not rating quantity, you're rating quality.
