[RPG]: Unhallowed Metropolis, reviewed by Lisa Padol (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13621.phtml

Lisa Padol's Summary:

Excellent worldbuilding and attention to detail make this a game the zombie hoardes can have only when they pry it out of my cold, undead fingers.

Hey there,

Nice review! I think you got the right of it regarding the setting: this is a game you will want to play if the mad combination of zombies, corsets, Tesla-tech, and Victoriana appeal to you. Even if those aren't your cup o', there's still something in there that anybody will be able to grab onto and turn into a fun story, I think.

I would add two quick addenda to what you've said:

First, there are three Callings you didn't mention: Aristocrat, Criminal and Doctor. These three represent the non-(overtly)-combat types, whose social skills and knowledge of the world offer other options than just clobbering zombies all day long. Each has its niche in the world, and the Aristocrat and Doctor have rules specific to those niches. For example, Aristocrats are desperate to avoid scandals, which could utterly ruin them, so there are scandal rules (though they are not especially crunchy); and Doctors are the ones who create life (whether through alchemy, galvanics or gene-splicing), and they also have a whole host of medicines and other preparations they can make to do all sorts of miraculous and ghastly things.

Second, regarding the spread of the Blight, I don't think there is really an intended answer, or a place to go, in the long-term. Short of divine intervention (which few really believe in anymore, being Victorian-ish and all), everyone knows they're doomed, and it's a matter of "keeping a stiff upper lip, wot?" The emphasis for the game, whether in the long- or the short-term seems to me to be tormenting your character in awful ways that range from the gritty to the melodramatic. You may have a Doctor who is trying to find a way to cure the Blight (in fact, that's what my character's sister is doing in our game), but the ultimate point is not curing the Blight...it's how your noble ambitions become your downfall.

Anyway, *high-five*! UnMet is a pretty good game, all in all, and your review does it some justice. Nice one.
