[RPG]: Godlike, reviewed by merb101 (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13738.phtml

Michael Erb's Summary:

An excellent rpg of super heroes in World War II. The game system is fairly simple and fast to run, the writing and story material is excellent, but the subject material might be a little intense for more casual gamers.

Michael,

Thanks for the great review.

Your thoughts about finding players are interesting. I've never run into that problem at all, either with my friends or at conventions, but then most of my friends who game are either military history buffs or else comics fans who appreciate Godlike's unusual take on superheroes, and so are the gamers at conventions who are curious about Godlike. So I haven't heard complaints about Godlike's wartime setting, but you're certainly right -- if players are squeamish about war, think hard about sitting them down for a World War II game that takes the war seriously.

Re: [RPG]: Godlike, reviewed by merb101 (4/5)

I was rather surprised by player reaction to the game (before they played it). I had several war-themed games in a stack I offered to run, and was surprised when they passed them all over. I explained Godlike was closer to the television show "Heroes" but set in World War II, but that still didn't sway a few of them. The ones that did play really enjoyed the game, but we probably concentrated less on the realistic themes and made it a bit more comic book.

I am working on a review of "Wild Talents" and that is one of the things I plan to mention, how it seems easier to scale that game in terms of realism and theme since there is no set theme. I think there also is advice in the book on how to do just that, which is very useful to starting players/game masters.
