[TRO Challenge 2] My Game Fu is still stronger than yours

OK there have been a number of requests on the previous challenge thread

http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=409506&page=24

to start a new challenge.

The idea of the challenge is to design a complete RPG in a week based on a number of criteria that the Judges come up with. For anyone not familiar with the challenge the early part of that thread will give you an idea. If anyone wants to look at the fantastic entries we had last time then they can be found here.

http://rpgnet.gavken.net/

So we need both competitors and judges to kick off the new challenge. We need 1-3 judges who will set up the criteria for the challenge and an idea of how many people would like to take part this time.

Heck yes, count me in again.
And, astoundingly, you chose the exact same title as I was about to suggest in that other thread.

I might even read the judges categories this time...

Why start reading the judges categories now? You did really well last time without it :-).

The title was based around the "I know what you did last summer" / "I still know what you did last summer" sequel type thing.

I was thinking that maybe we could have a different twist this time, but I'd leave that to any volonteer judges....

I'd be up for it (as a competitor, that is).

If no one else volonteers then I will judge again, but I'd prefer to play. If I end up judging I may put in a non participant entry to see how I do.

My suggestion for a twist this time is that the setting ingredients be pictures that the participant uses to inspire the setting.

What was the 'twist' last time?

There was none. The "twist" he refers is something to make this one different from the last one.

If I may, I didn't really care much for the ingredients list we used last time. I had a hard time getting inspired, and given the similarities between some of the entries I don't feel the ingredients offered enough variety. I guess I did okay (ahem... pardon me while I blush heavily) but I'm hoping that there's more variety, and more latitude for how to interpret an ingredient this time. That is in no way meant as a negative criticism of those who chose the ingredients on the list. Just some observational input, if you would.

I thnk they did that for Gamechef last time: got artists to submit some small sets (3-5 pics) of black and white art, then built games around them. It was neat, but I didn't finish.

Another good challenge that *can* be amusing is the reverse engineering game. You start with a character sheet (everyone makes one) and then make games based on the sheets. Sometimes you get really goofy or overly specific character sheets though, ones that try too hard to "be the game" and it kind of screws up the process. IMHO, and all that.

Anyway, I'd be up for another go round. I've been wanting an excuse to get some book written, and I'd like to participate this go around. I'd offer to judge again, but my life is pretty hectic at work right now. And NaNoWriMo is up next month, so my free time is rapidly being consumed.

Re: [TRO Challenge 2] My Game Fu is still stronger than yours

This was one of the reasons for suggesting that the setting ingredients are pictures as this should provide more variety. The setting ones used last time were far too similar. Also there was a bit of duplication from one of the game mechanics to one of the judging criteria.

Any other suggestions for different twists are welcomed. It was my first time doing this and the criteria weren't perfect last time.
