Books Every Gamer Should Own

Watching through Star Trek: DS9 lately (check out my thread on that here) had the side effect of prompting me to flip through my old LUG Star Trek RPG books. This was an amazingly good line, but two books stand out in particular - the Narrator's Toolkit books for TNG (Kenneth Hite) and TOS (S. John Ross) Trek. The DS9 Toolkit, while a great book, is very focused on running better DS9 games. The other two are focused on running better games.

They both offer solid advice ranging from the basics to advanced GMing techniques that I think would be of benefit to any gamer.

So, anyone else have any favorite books to suggest along these lines?

Edit for Clarification: by "these lines" I mean gaming books that you'd recommend to anyone, regardless of the system for which they were written.

Re: Books Every Gamer Should Own

The first book that comes to mind is Hobby Games: The 100 Best.

Full of essays by a variety of game designers talking about their favorite games and explaining why they are great. The catch is that none of them were allowed to talk about games they worked on. Overall there is some great material in the book and everyone should check it out.

Listen Up You Primitive Screwheads has applications outside Cyberpunk 2020. Particularly on campaign design and maintenance.

Burning Wheel

love or hate it the advise is well thought out. Even if you don't agree with the author it will help you define what style you like in your GMing.

Re: Books Every Gamer Should Own

Every gamer should have some version of Call of Cthulhu on their shelf.

BRP, D20 , or Trail of Cthulhu are all fine games with something to offer.

Re: Books Every Gamer Should Own

I second the Munchkin's Guide to Power Gaming.

I would recommend Destiny's Price, a OWOD mage supplement about street gangs, drugs and the like. Very good book.

I really liked the LUG Star Trek books as well.

I highly recommend anything written by C. J. Carella, love his work.

Rifts Conversion Book 2: Pantheons of the Megaverse. Say what you want about RIFTS, but they cram a billion ideas into just about everything. This book has some interesting alternate takes on most of the big pantheons that can be worked into games from super to fantasy.
